du Bill Shock in 2026: Why Your Bill Spiked and the Guards That Stop It

A spiked du bill is almost always one of five things: data past your pack, roaming without a pack, auto-renewed add-ons stacking, carrier-billed services, or usage on a shared line. Set a spend cap and usage alerts in the du app, kill auto-renew on one-off packs, and block roaming when unused - and send us the bill on WhatsApp for a free line-by-line audit.

The five usual suspects

Out-of-bundle data is first: the pack ended and the phone kept scrolling on per-MB fallback rates that run fast. Second is roaming - data roaming ON with no pack attached, usually on the first day of a trip. Third, auto-renewed add-ons: day packs that quietly renew every cycle long after the trip that justified them.

Fourth, carrier-billed services - app-store subscriptions billed to your du number are a checkout option many people tick once and forget. Fifth, shared and family lines: someone else's usage lands on the master bill and looks like your spike.

Set the guards (ten minutes, once)

In the du app: set a spend limit and usage alerts so the line bars or warns before the meter runs wild. Kill auto-renew on any one-off pack. Data roaming stays OFF unless a pack is active. Open the services list and switch off any carrier-billed or premium item you do not recognise. On shared plans, review each line's usage - not just the master total.

Prepaid note: prepaid cannot go negative, but a balance drained before payday hurts the same way - the same guards, plus a small auto-renew main pack, close the gap.

If the shock already happened

Pull the itemised bill in the app, mark the lines you dispute, raise it with du, and keep the ticket number. If it is unresolved after the operator's response window, TDRA escalation comes next and must cite that dated ticket number.

Send us the PDF on WhatsApp first - we mark every line item, tell you which charges are genuinely disputable, and draft the complaint wording. It is free, and it is the same audit we run for ourselves.

Quick answers

Why was I charged after my pack ended?

Out-of-bundle per-MB and per-minute rates apply in the gap between packs. A spend cap, plus auto-renewal on your main pack, closes that gap permanently.

Do app subscriptions go through du?

Only if you chose carrier billing at checkout - otherwise they bill via your app store. Carrier-billed items on a du bill name the service, which is how you spot them.

How does a du spend limit work exactly?

You set a ceiling in the app; usage past it triggers a bar or an alert per your setting. The live cap options for your plan type are shown in the app before you save.

About this page

Written by Tasleem Akhtar, Senior Telecom Advisor. Independent service: we are not du or Etisalat, we do not sell your data, and we never route you into a call queue. Figures are read from the operators' public pricing and help pages, then a person checks your address, your bill and your line state before you commit to anything.

Where to check it yourself

These pages belong to the operators and the regulator - open them side by side with your own bill or app before acting on anything here.

Verify this yourself in two minutes

  • Prices and inclusions: the operator's own plan page or order form - the app shows the live figure for your line.
  • Your line state: the operator app - Account > Services shows suspensions, bars, data caps and contract end.
  • Anything regulatory (billing disputes, escalation): TDRA - your complaint must cite the ticket number the operator gave you, dated.

If a number on this page and a number in your app disagree, the app wins - and we would like to know: WhatsApp us the screenshot and we correct the page.
